Artificial intelligence (AI) is pervading the economic and social life. This has sparked a lively and ongoing debate about the impact of AI on economies and societies, and the necessary regulation and requirements that should be put on AI. An important aspect is the increasing prevalence of (strategic) interactions between humans and AI, and how this might change human behavior. Based on a survey of experimental studies employing computer players, I discuss the potential role of experimental economics in the AI debate. I derive first lessons from the literature and suggest directions for future research. I also discuss novel developments surrounding, e.g., ChatGPT.
