The 2020 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, published on 11 September 2019, ranks University of Crete (UoC) 351-400 again this year out of 1,396 institutions worldwide, up from 1,258 universities ranked last year. The University also holds its position within Greece – first out of the 10 Greek universities now included in this ranking.
The THE World University Rankings, now in its 16 th year, focus on a selected frame of the world’s research intensive universities, rather than the total global ‘pool’ of over 20,000 Higher Education Institutions. The increasing number of ranked universities reflects primarily increasing representation from S.E.Asia, particularly China. 13 indicators are used to measure University performance in teaching, research output and impact, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. In one particular area, citations, used as an indicator of research impact and influence, the UoC continues to punch above its weight – ranking #109 worldwide (compared with #143 last year).
